New EU H2020 Project - European Calculator: trade-offs and pathways towards sustainable and low-carbon European Societies kick-off meeting in Potsdam

11/29/2016 - Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kropp, Deputy Chair of RD2, has invited all partners of the new H2020 project "EU Calculator: trade-offs and pathways towards sustainable and low-carbon European Societies" to Potsdam for a kick-off meeting from 12th to 14th December 2016.

After an initial talk by H.J. Schellnhuber highlighting the challenges of the necessary societal transitions, Franz Immler - head of Sector Climate Action of the European Commission - provided an overview of how the actual and sister projects fit into the overarching low carbon strategy of the European Union.

The project "EU Calculator" will deliver an urgently needed comprehensive framework for research, business, and public sector decision makers which identifies and enables an appraisal of synergies and trade-offs of feasible European decarbonisation pathways. It explores the impact of the choices that can be made in different sectors, including power and heat generation, transport, industry, buildings, agriculture, and food and of the underlying lifestyle choices of Europe’s citizens in terms of the climatological, societal, and economical consequences. For politicians and policy makers at the European and member state levels, stakeholders and innovators, EU Calculator will provide a transitions pathways explorer, which can be used as a concrete planning tool for reconciling the urgent need for technological and societal change.
