Biosketch

John Raven is Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Dundee, UK. After obtaining his PhD from the University of Cambridge (UK) in Botany, specialising in bioenergetics and membrane transport processes in giant-celled algae, he continued in Cambridge as a Research Fellow and fixed-term lecturer until 1971 when he moved to the University of Dundee as a Lecturer in Biology. He became a Professor at Dundee in 1980, and was Boyd Baxter Professor of Biology from 1994 until 2008 when he formally retired. He has wide interests in bioenegetics, biogeochemistry, resource use in photosynthetic organisms, ecophysiology, palaeoecology and astrobiology. Professor Raven is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He has published over 330 refereed publications, over 50 book chapters, was author of the book Energetics and Transport in Aquatic Plants (1984), and, with Professor Paul Falkowski, of the book Aquatic Photosynthesis (1997, second edition 2007). He is still active in research, teaching and editing, and has several international collaborations.
