UN High-level Panel joins Memorandum signing ceremony

05/16/2011 - President Tarja Halonen, Gro Harlem Brundtland and Kevin Rudd among members of the UN High-level Panel on Global Sustainability to participate at the presentation of the results from the Nobel Laureate Symposium on 18 May. The High-level Panel on Global Sustainability appointed by the UN Secretary General represented by the co-chair, President Tarja Halonen of the Republic of Finland will come to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm for the presentation of the results from 3rd Nobel Laureate Symposium on Global Sustainability on May 18th at 2 pm CET. The ceremony will be followed by a press conference.

The results will be presented in the document titled “Stockholm Memorandum: Planetary Opportunities – Transforming the World in an Era of Global Change” which will be signed by Nobel Laureates and handed over to the High-level Panel’s co-chair President Tarja Halonen.

Among the members of the UN High-level Panel participating in Stockholm are James Laurence Balsillie, Co-CEO, Research in Motion, and Chair of the Board, Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), Canada, Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway and former Chair of the World Commission on Environment and Development, Julia Carabias, Environmentalist and former Secretary of the Environment of Mexico, Gunilla Carlsson, Minister for International Development Cooperation of Sweden, Luisa Dias Diogo, Member of Parliament and former Prime Minister of Mozambique, Peter Maurer, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, Kevin Rudd, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia, Han Seung-soo, Chairman of the Governing Board, Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea and Freundel Stuart, Prime Minister of Barbados.

Feeds into 2012 RIO +20 UN Conference
The Stockholm Memorandum will synthesise the discussions by Symposium delegates on how economic, political and social systems can be governed within the boundaries of the planet.

The Stockholm Memorandum and the conclusions of the High-level Panel will feed into the preparations for the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro (Rio +20) and into the ongoing climate negotiations.
