For the tenth time in a row, PIK is one of the world's leading think tanks for environmental policy. As the world's number one "Top Environment Policy Think Tank" , PIK positions itself ahead of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the World Resources Institute in Washington D.C. Moreover, PIK also ranks among the Top Think Tanks Worldwide, the Top Energy and Resource Policy Think Tanks, the Best Government Affiliated Think Tanks and the Think Tanks with the Most Significant Impact on Public Policy. The "Global Go To Think Tank Index Report 2018" just published by the University of Pennsylvania includes more than 6,500 institutes from all over the world in its ranking. Published since 2008, the annual ranking is based on international surveys of more than 7,500 academics, public and private institutions, policy makers and journalists from around the world.

Among the 100 "most important German-speaking intellectuals" in the Cicero ranking is climate economist Ottmar Edenhofer, Director of PIK and the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC), as on of the newcomers of the year. Among the top 200 are as well climate scientists Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director Emeritus of PIK, and newcomer Stefan Rahmstorf, Chair of PIK's research department Earth System Analysis. The notably high number of social and natural scientists in the ranking shows that science is gaining more and more influence in an increasingly complex world. The ranking is based on the presence in 160 journals and newspapers as well as mentions on the Internet and the research platform Google Scholar.
