Edenhofer speaks at CDU and CSU events

09/09/2019 - The two sister Parties of the German conservatives are seeking the expertise of climate economist Ottmar Edenhofer, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change. Prior to the Federal Government's decision on the possible introduction of a national CO2 pricing, Edenhofer was invited as an expert to several events by CDU and CSU, just as he had already presented the state of research to other Parties, ministries and associations. Edenhofer with his team from PIK and MCC has contributed the climatic-economic part of the report on CO2 pricing by the German Council of Economic Experts.

Last week, Edenhofer gave a keynote speech at the CDU's all-day workshop on climate protection in its Berlin headquarters, the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus. Other speakers included Clemens Fuest, President of the Ifo Institute for Economic Research, the CDU Chair Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, and the General Secretaries of the CSU and CDU, Markus Blume and Paul Ziemiak. Questions ranging from mobility to energy were discussed in six working groups. In particular, the media reported on an impulse from the President of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, who said that the stabilisation of our climate was not available free of charge - "but not having climate protection will be even more expensive".

Edenhofer also spoke at the traditional closed meeting of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group's executive committee this week, which took place in Potsdam. The faction is led by Ralph Brinkhaus (CDU) and his first deputy Alexander Dobrindt (CSU). Chancellor Angela Merkel was also present, and the members of parliament adopted the paper "Good Climate. Strong Germany". On 17 September, the CSU invites the Bavarian-born Edenhofer to the "Future Dialogue Environment" in the monastery of Banz near Bamberg.
