Cities and Climate Conference: International experts discuss a sustainable future for cities

09/14/2017 - More than 150 city experts from all over the world will come together next week in Potsdam to discuss the future of our cities under climate change. Cities are at the center of the global climate change problem. Not only are they the origin of large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, they are also vastly affected by the impacts of climate change – like extreme weather events that generate high socioeconomic costs. The ‘Cities and Climate Conference 2017’, which is taking place from the 19th-21st of September 2017 in Potsdam, will therefore discuss how cities of the future can become more sustainable and resilient.

The ‘Cities and Climate Conference 2017’ will take place from the 19th-21st of September 2017 in Potsdam

“While we know that cities are responsible for a large amount of greenhouse gas emissions, they are in parallel also affected by the impacts of climate change. Indeed, only recent events such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in the US or the monsoon flooding in South Asia have shown how vulnerable cities are with regard to the consequences of climate change,” Jürgen Kropp of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research explains. Today already 50 percent of the global population lives in cities. From infrastructure and transportation to city planning and governance, health, energy consumption and tourism - the conference will explore the latest advances in research and practice addressing climate change and their possible trade-offs and synergies with mitigation and sustainability objectives.

The Cities and Climate Conference 2017 concludes the European research project RAMSES, aimed at solving global urbanization challenges for cities in transition. RAMSES stands for Reconciling Adaptation, Mitigation and Sustainable Development for citiES. The project pools world leading institutions involved in climate change related city research and seeks to develop practical urban adaptation and mitigation measures for a sustainable future in cities.
