A thorough and independently conducted evaluation of the Potsdam Institute confirmed its excellent status. Federal and state funding of the research for another seven years have been approved of.

The institutes of the Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (WGL) undergo the intense evaluation process every seven years at least. The Leibniz-Gemeinschaft had an international team of renowned and independent evaluators carefully examine the institute in Potsdam.

As the senate of the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft concluded, the PIK is one of the leading institutes worldwide on the field of climate impact research. The modeling of climate and biological systems that are affected by climate change are rated ‚outstanding’. The senate also noted that the number and quality of publications by PIK researchers were impressive. The exemplary interdisciplinary approach of the institute had a large impact on the international research on global change. The PIK’s performance in scientific counseling for policymakers and knowledge transfer to the public were also noted to be remarkable.

The Leibniz-Gemeinschaft’s system of evaluation is regarded as one of the most comprehensive for German and European research institutions. 83 non-university institutions for research on fields of societal interest belong to the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft.
