Profile

Juliana Gärtner is research analyst on global environmental change to the PIK directorship. Since 2019, she works with PIK Director Johan Rockström, focusing on sustainable food systems and land-use transformations. Since 2017, she advances interdisciplinary science-based policy advice with PIK Director Emeritus John Schellnhuber in the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). The council's most recent flagship report "Towards our common digital future" examines the impact of digitalization on the global sustainability transition. The next flagship report will investigate the challenge of global sustainable land-use and the promise of nature-based solutions.

Before joining PIK, Juliana was a Carlo-Schmid scholar and consultant to the UNDP Small Grants Programme in Ecuador, advising the design of their youth strategy for bio-cultural resilience and supporting the rural earthquake relief effort.

She holds an M.Phil. in 'Nature, Society and Environmental Policy' from Oxford University, where she focused on critical environmental geography and the food sovereignty movement. She also holds a B.A. in Economics and Geography from the University of London (SOAS, KCL). Her studies were funded by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung d. dt. Volkes), the Hans-Rudolf Foundation and Oxford University, St. Edmund Hall.
