Formation

The Society of Friends and Promoters of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research e.V. (PIK) was founded on 11 December 2002. Professor Udo E. Simonis, Berlin, was chosen as president, Professor Klaus Hasselmann, Hamburg, as vice-president, and Dr. Ursula Kleinhans, Berlin, as treasurer.

Current governing body

The current governing body of the “Friends of PIK” consists of Professor Manfred Stock, Potsdam, as president, Dr. Hermann E. Ott, Berlin, as vice-president, and Publisher Jürgen Strauss, Potsdam, as treasurer.

Goals

The purpose of the association is to support science and research at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and to promote the image of PIK as an international institution. In this context it seeks to support PIK (in particular through providing financial backing) in the realization of its goals as a tax-privileged, non-profit institution, and in upholding and furthering its reputation through public events, among other means.

Further goals of the association, according to paragraph 2 of its statutes, are

  • to intensify the relationship between PIK and other branches of science, with representatives of business, art, culture, and politics,

  • to develop and use forms of communication which help convey scientific thinking to a broader public,

  • to provide moral and material support in developing a scientific infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe and in developing countries,

  • and to involve PIk in the public debate on further developments in Potsdam and its surroundings.

Activities - A Selection

July 2016

Acceptance speech of Udo E. Simonis on the occasion of his appointment as honorary chairman of the Society of Friends and Promoters of PIK. The tribute took place during the festive symposium on biodiversity in Potsdam, July 19.

April 2016

General assembly and new elections in the Society:

Professor Manfred Stock was elected as president, Dr. Herman E. Ott as vice-president, and Publisher Jürgen Strauss as treasurer. Minister a.D. Dr. h.c. Hinrich Enderlein was elected as auditor.


September 2015

The Society again had offered a „prize for the best dissertation of the year“. The prize was handed over during the celebrations on the opening of the new PIK research building on the 28th of September 2015 to:

Dr. Jessica Strefler for her thesis “Challenges for Low Stabilization of Climate Change”, and

Dr. Peter J. Menck for his thesis “How Wires Shape Volumes”.


August 2014

The Society had offered a “prize for the best IT work at PIK”. The prize was handed over during the PIK summer festival on the 28th of August 2014 to:

Dipl.-Ing. Karsten Kramer, Head of the IT-Services of PIK.


April 2014

In 2013, the Society again had offered a "prize for the best dissertation of the year". The prize was handed over during the PIK PhD Days on the 1st of April 2014 to:

Dr. Matthias Kalkuhl for his thesis "The Calculus of Climate Policy", and

Dr. Christoph Schmitz for his thesis "The Future of Food Supply in a Constraining Environment".

 

December 2013

Professor Frank Biermann, member of the Society, received the “Senior Social Impact Award” of the VU Amsterdam for his path-breaking research on global environmental policy and his pioneering work on earth system governance. Congratulations by the board of directors of the Society.

 

May 2013

General assembly and new elections of the Society:

Professor Udo E. Simonis was re-elected as president.

Professor Martin Welp was re-elected as vice-president.

 

October 2012

Professor Ernst U. von Weizsäcker, member of the Society, was elected as Co-President of the Club of Rome. Congratulations by the board of directors of the Society.

 

September 2012

In January 2012, Stefan Rahmstorf’s book “Clouds, Wind and Weather” was elected environmental book of the month by the Deutsche Umweltstiftung (German Environment Foundation). In September, it was honoured as “Environmental book of the year 2012”. The Society extended its warm congratulations to Professor Rahmstorf.

 

June 2012

The Society had offered a “prize for the best administrative work at PIK”. The prize was handed over during the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of PIK on the 20th of June 2012 to:

Frauke Haneberg, Head of Finance and Deputy Head of Administration of PIK, and

Vera Großmann, Head of the Personnel Office of PIK.

Congratulations went to the members:

Professor Lenelis Kruse-Graumann on the “B.A.U.M. Environmental Award 2012”, and

Professor Udo E. Simonis on the “Urban Mining Award 2012”.

 

December 2011

Once again, the Society had offered a “prize for the best dissertation of the year”. The prize was handed over during the PIK Research Days on the 14th of December 2011 to:

Dr. Jan Philipp Dietrich for his thesis “Efficient Treatment of Cross-Scale Interactions in a Land-Use Model”, and

Dr. Michael Pahle for his thesis “Investments in Liberalized Electricity Markets and the Low-Carbon Energy Transition”.

 

November 2011

The Society congratulated Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director of PIK, on the “Volvo Environment Prize 2011”, and Professor Udo E. Simonis on the “Environmental Media Prize 2011” of the Deutsche Umwelthilfe (German Environment Aid) for his lifetime achievement.

 

August 2011

General assembly and new elections of the Society:

December 2010

The Society had offered a “prize for the best cooperation within PIK” to encourage national and international cooperation projects. The first prize went to:

Dr. Claudine Chen and the PRIMAP-Team of the work “Climate-Action-Tracker”.

Dr. Dieter Gerten won a prize of recognition for the work “Functions of Religion in Global Climate Change.”

 

January 2010

Congratulations by the board of directors of the Society to the member

Professor Klaus Hasselmann on the Spanish “Frontiers of Knowledge Award 2009” in the category climate change.

 

 December 2009

During 2009, the Society supported among others the symposium “Sustainability and global change”, the event on the introduction of Professor Wolfgang Lucht, the presentations of PIK at the UN-Climate Conference in Copenhagen, and the activities of the institute at the “Long Night of the Sciences”.

 

February 2009

Dr. Ursula Kleinhans was elected as cash controller.

Professor Hans-Jürgen Bolle was thanked for his multi-year engagement on the board of directors, and Dr. Bernd-Uwe Jahn was thanked for his engagement as cash controller since the foundation of the Society in 2002.

Again in 2008, the activities of PIK at the “Long Night of the Sciences” were supported and attracted a large number of visitors.

 

November 2007

The Society awarded a “prize for the best dissertation of the year”. The prize was handed over during the PIK Research Days on the 26th of October 2007 to:

Dr. Eileen Mikusky for her thesis “Concentrated Atmospheric Turbulences”, and

Dr. Boris Orlowsky for his thesis “Regional Climate Simulations”.

Congratulations by the Society to the multi-year Deputy Director of PIK, Dr. Manfred Stock, on his appointment as Honorary Professor at the Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences.

In 2007, the Society again supported the activities of PIK at the “Long Night of the Sciences”. The contributions of PIK to the Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC 2007 were of particular interest to the numerous visitors.

 

February 2007

In appreciation of his extraordinary efforts during the reconstruction of the “Reinhard-Süring House” and the “Meteorological Station”, the Society honoured

Lothar Lindenhan with the prize for sustainable activites at PIK.

 

November 2006

November 2005

The Society had offered a “prize for the best cooperative project at PIK”. Based on the recommendation of an international jury, the prize was handed over during a celebration on the 25th of November 2005 to the groups of:

Professor Wolfgang Cramer, Dr. Anne de la Vega-Leinert, Dr. Richard J.T. Klein
for the project “Environmental Vulnerability Assessment”,

Professor Wolfgang Lucht for the project “Scenarios of Expanded Human Use of the Biosphere”,

Professor Fritz Reusswig for the project “Lifestyle Dynamics and Sustainable Consumption Patterns”.

 

November 2005

On the occasion of the return of the Director of PIK, Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, from England, the Society organised a “Director’s Dinner” on the 25th of November 2005 whose net proceeds were used to increase the Society’s funds.

 

June 2005

Again, the activities of the institute at the “Long Night of the Sciences” were supported financially and attracted a large number of visitors.

 

November 2004

For the first time, the Society awarded a “prize for the best dissertation of the year” according to the goals of its statute. The prize winners were chosen by an international jury. The prize was handed over during a celebration on the 19th of November 2004 to:

Dr. Kirsten Thonicke for her thesis “Fire Ecology”, and

Dr. Kirsten Zickfeld for her thesis “Singular Climate Events”.

 

June 2004

As in 2003, this year the Society of Friends and Promoters of the Potsdam Institute e.V. again supported the activities of PIK at the “Long Night of the Sciences”. A high number of visitors confirmed strong public interest in climate impact research.
