“Wissen – Wahrheit – Wunsch”: Parliamentary Evening of the Leibniz Association

Panel discussion about the role of science in the discourse about facts and opinions, with John Schellnhuber, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). “The phenomenon ‘filter bubble’ is nothing new. Humans have always received information selectively and adapted them to their respective knowledge horizons. So what is different now? Is it the distribution though social networks? Or the flood of information in the internet, growing and growing mostly without quality assurance and fact checks? Is it smart internet algorithms delivering nothing but those information to users that suit their profiles? Is it crafty strategies that systematically circulate wrong news? Did we simply lose the overview? Or is the loud discourse in the media about facts and opinions just a trend, that we will have overcome in a few months? Which is the role of science, and which one should it play? Is it still our designated authority concerning fact-based knowledge? How can it make its voice be heard better and as good as necessary? Which formats and locations are therefore appropriate? And politics – how can politics and science support each other? These and further questions will be discussed at this year’s parliamentary evening of the Leibniz Association.” The entrance is free, registration necessary (via mail by November 24, see below). Event in German language without translation.
