Citizens' Award Kassel ("Das Glas der Vernunft"): Saúl Luciano Lliuya

The founding director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) John Schellnhuber delivers the ceremonial address within this year’s presentation of the Citizens' Award Kassel ("Das Glas der Vernunft"). The awardee Saúl Luciano Lliuya from the Peruvian High Andes "requests through a civil action from a German energy company, Europe’s largest CO2 emitter, a share in the costs of protective measures saving his property from an impending deluge from a glacial lake, as the emissions from the power plants contribute to the warming of the Earth’s atmosphere and thus the melting of the eternal ice of the Andes and the rise of the water level. With this initiative he by democratic means establishes a link between climate-relevant production methods in the industrialized nations and their impacts on regions thousands of miles away. So he appeals not only in favour of himself but of 50.000 also endagered residents of his hometown Huarez to a gobal-oriented conscientiousness. We honour his courage in by means of reason and justice obliging the involved actors to take the responsibility for the hazards resulting from their action." Admission tickets for the event in the opera of the Staatstheater Kassel can be purchased in advance via e-mail or phone.
