Stefan Rahmstorf receives ZEIT Wissen prize “Courage for Sustainability”

09/04/2019 – Stefan Rahmstorf has been awarded the "ZEIT Wissen-Prize 'Mut zur Nachhaltigkeit' – Encouraging Sustainability" for his achievements in communicating climate change. With this award, the magazine of the ZEIT publishing group honours pioneers from science, industry, and civil society, who contribute outstandingly to closing the gap between knowledge and action in the area of sustainable development. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros.

"I am very happy about the award, which is a great encouragement for further work. The communication of knowledge and facts about climate change is not always easy. But the topic is more urgent than ever, " says Stefan Rahmstorf, Head of Earth System Analysis at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).

Rahmstorf has co-founded two influential climate science blogs, the English-language blog RealClimate and the German-language blog KlimaLounge. He also takes an active part in the discussion in social media. He communicates the research on climate change and its consequences in a way that is both scientifically sound and understandable to laymen. In addition to his more than 100 academic publications, Rahmstorf is also the author of several books. Available in English are The Climate Crisis (2010), and Our Threatened Oceans (2009). Rahmstorf has been working at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research since 1996. One focus of his research is the role of ocean currents in climate change. Rahmstorf studied physics at the Universities of Ulm and Konstanz and physical oceanography at the University of Wales (Bangor). He received his doctorate in oceanography from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. In 2010, he was elected Fellow of the AGU for his outstanding scientific achievements. In 2007, he was awarded the prestigious AGU Prize for Climate Communication.
