Dr. Aman Malik

Postdoctoral Researcher
Malik

Aman Malik is a Postdoctoral researcher at the Postdam Institute of Climate Impact Research. In his Doctoral dissertation, he looked at the various techno-economic and sociopolitical barriers to decarbonisation of the power sector, focusing mainly on India. He finished his Masters' degree from the University of Hamburg in 2017, specialising in carbon-di-oxide removal technologies and economics of climate change. He further has an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering, during which he investigated the efficiency of biogas plants with different household and non-household feedstock.

My main area of research is understanding the policy challenges to decarbonisation of the power sector, especially in India. Within this theme, I have worked on identifying how near-term policies could lead to stranded assets of coal power plants; investigating the structural changes in energy employment arising from decarbonisation, and identifying the role of the power sector in the just transition of coal-bearing regions.

I like to combine results from Integrated Assessment models with bottom-up data from government reports, policies, and power-infrastructure datasets like the Global Energy Monitor to identify policies needed in the next decade to keep us on track with the Paris Agreement.
