The impacts of climate change in Europe require different options of adaptation and mitigation to support climate-neutral and risk-adjusted development. Assessments of risks and the cost of climate change impacts go hand in hand with modelling scenarios for decarbonisation pathways and management options for viticulture and forest on the continent across national borders.

Our Work in the Region

The risk assessment of catastrophes and climate extremes is highly intertwined with the direct and indirect cost of climate change impacts. Solid adaptation and mitigation measures for future planning and decision-making is key in order to bridge gaps between single sectors and nations on the way to a climate smart transformation. Therefore, trade-offs and synergies of developments need to be discussed by all affected stakeholders.

In addition to manage the socio-economic transformation, natural systems need to be managed in a sustainable manner under climatic change. On the one hand, resilient forest ecosystems set the foundation for timber production for building and heating. On the other hand, forest function as natural carbon sinks and provide other important ecosystem services. Viti- and silviculture practices will change in the face of climate change and profound modelling on different management scenarios will help informed decision-making.
