Expert statement by Prof. Hermann Lotze-Campen on Food and Bioeconomy

15/11/2021 - The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has invited Prof. Dr. Hermann Lotze-Campen to write an expert statement on SDG 2, 'Zero Hunger', and the bioeconomy within the "BMBF Science Year on Bioeconomy" in 2020-2021.
Expert statement by Prof. Hermann Lotze-Campen on Food and Bioeconomy

In his written statement, Prof. Lotze-Campen states that the bioeconomy will develop dynamically as a logical consequence of ambitious goals to avoid greenhouse gas emissions and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to Lotze-Campen, the future development of sustainable biomass production systems in different regional contexts will determine to a large extent whether and how human society can meet the SDGs of the UN Agenda 2030 and comply with the Planetary Boundaries. Sustainable socio-economic development will above everything else require a mix of coherent policy instruments to set the right incentives for economic actors to achieve the goals.

The PIK Department Climate Resilience contributes to this need by making comprehensive, quantitative, computer-based future scenarios available to policy makers, businesses and civil society. These highlight the trade-offs and synergies between different SDGs in the context of a growing bioeconomy. Researchers are constantly developing their models in order to calculate specific indicators for all 17 SDGs and map their concrete interactions.
