Fritz Reusswig in interview on COP26 "Coalition of the motivated should press forward"

07/11/2021 - In an interview with Marietta Schwarz from 'Deutschlandfunkkultur' on the Glasgow climate conference, RD2 senior scientist Fritz Reusswig reasons that pressure not only from civil society organisations such as Fridays for Future, but also from the private sector will encourage governments to take action, but it is unwise to wait for the lowest common denominator. Instead, the countries and institutions that are willing to press forward should do so without waiting to convince the last reluctant ones.

Although there is enough to be critical about in terms of current climate policies (subvention of fossil fuels to name one), there are also a few positive developments that may have a positive impact on climate action. Pressure from several companies and businesses is increasing and civil society's concern for climate change is much stronger than ten years ago. Resistance of populist parties does make the whole process a lot more difficult, but it is hopeful that a survey showed that 50% of AfD-voters agreed that climate change is a big threat to Germany. It is extremely important to keep an open dialogue with those people who aren't entirely opposed to science. We should take their worries seriously and make sure that the costs and consequences of climate measures are regulated in a socially just manner.
