Within two related projects funded by the Global Challenges Foundation (GCF) and the Earth Commission (EC), PIK is looking for

(Position number: 10-2021-Postdoc Modeler GCF or 11-2021 Postdoc Modeler EC)

starting on 15.03.2021 or as soon as possible.

The first position (10-2021 Postdoc Modeler GCF) is funded until 12/31/2023. An extension to a total of 36 months is specifically intended, conditional on approval by the funding agency. Subject to final approval, the second position (11-2021 Postdoc Modeler EC) is initially funded for 24 months with the possibility of further extension depending on the availability of funds. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E13. The positions are full-time with a weekly working time of 40 hours per week. The positions can be filled on a part-time basis.

The Global Challenges Foundation (GCF: https://globalchallenges.org/) is a non-profit foundation supporting increased awareness and knowledge of global systemic risks to humanity and of the governance required to manage such threats.

The Earth Commission (EC: https://earthcommission.org/) is a group of leading scientists convened by Future Earth. Their mission is to assess the latest science to underpin the development of science-based targets for Earth systems like land, water, and biodiversity.

  1. 1.      Post Doctoral Earth System Modeler GCF (10-2021 Postdoc Modeler GCF)

In this position the successful candidate will support a review of global systemic risks caused by declining Earth system resilience to anthropogenic interference. Findings will contribute to both a Global Risks Report by GCF and a major EC report on the state of the Earth system. Qualifications of the applicant will demonstrate an ability to advance and perform research with PIK’s integrated Earth System Model (POEM). A focus will be on the integrity of the ecosphere, biogeochemical cycles on land and in the oceans, and associated Earth system tipping points. The applicant will have expertise in advanced computer modelling, planetary biogeochemistry or related disciplines and will be joining a team of Earth system modellers to add an analysis of large-scale systemic risks to the planetary human habitat. Future Earth will be coordinating the project with additional partners working on the governance of such risks.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead an assessment of systemic risks to the Earth system as the human habitat arising from interactions been human-caused ecological disturbances of the ecosphere (particularly land transformations), and global climate change (particularly extreme events and irreversible changes).
  • Advance development of relevant model components of the Potsdam Earth Model (POEM) in the areas of biogeochemical cycles on land and/or the oceans and ecolog-ical and agricultural disruptions, with a particular emphasis on system dynamics in-volving critical thresholds
  • Design, conduct and analyse appropriate simulation experiments with POEM
  • Actively form a network of activities with team members at PIK, the GCF and the EC
  • Write and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals that highlight findings from the research, and present research findings at conferences and workshops
  • Substantially contribute to writing of the GCF report on Global Systemic Risks and reports of the Earth Commission
  1. 2.      Post Doctoral Earth System Modeler EC (11-2021 Postdoc Modeler EC)

The successful candidate will support the work within Earth Commission WG1 (Earth-Human Systems Model Intercomparison Project EHSMIP) which aims at exploring the biophysical boundaries that define the long-term stability of the Earth system. Model experiments will be designed to assess feedbacks and interactions between atmosphere, ocean, land and biosphere, and to quantify key processes regulating the state of the Earth system, with a special focus on climate and carbon cycle feedbacks. The postdoctoral scientist will be responsible for furthering the development of the Potsdam Earth Model POEM as well as developing modeling protocols and conducting and analyzing simulations within EHSMIP.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design experiments and conduct simulations within the Earth-Human Systems Model Intercomparison Project (EHSMIP), with particular focus on tipping elements in the Earth system
  • Further the development and coupling of the Potsdam Earth Model (POEM), with a focus on climate and carbon cycle feedbacks
  • Co-supervise team members (doctoral student, research analyst)
  • Write and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals that highlight findings from the research, and present research findings at conferences and workshops
  • Contribute to writing of reports within the scope of the Earth Commission

Requirements for both positions:

  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field (mathematics, physics, geophysics or similar)
  • strong experience with Earth System modeling and model development
  • expertise in terrestrial and/or marine carbon cycle and/or atmosphere dynamics is a plus
