In Memoriam Johann Grüneweg

Dear Colleagues,

we are deeply touched by the recent passing of Johann Grüneweg.

Johann was one of the Institute’s very first members. Working initially in the Director’s Office and later in the department of Social Systems, Research Domain III, and the Executive Staff, he supported PIK in numerous ways. At work and beyond, many PIK employees knew him as a very friendly, ready-to-help and open-minded colleague who enjoyed talking to others in English, French and other languages.

Johann was born in East Friesland near the Dutch border. He grew up speaking Low German and Dutch – which might have been the decisive impulse to study languages graduating with a Diploma as interpreter from Cologne University of Applied Sciences. During the last weeks he attended a course in Swedish – possibly motivated by his love for ABBA songs. He was only 51 years old.

His humor and his generosity will always be remembered. All those who knew him well valued him as a good friend always willing to help and who lovingly cared for his mother.

We are deeply disturbed and saddened by his sudden passing. We grieve for a colleague and friend who will honestly be missed. Whoever wants to express his/her condolences, please sign the digital book of condolences.

With all our heartfelt sympathy,

The Board of Directors and the Employees' Council
