Related URL
Definition
This field provides hypertext URL links to Internet sites that contain
information related to the subject of the data, as well as other useful
Internet sites such as project home pages, related data archives/servers,
metadata extensions, online software packages, and calibration/validation
data.

Specifications
- This group is optional.
- This group may be repeated.
- The URL subfield may be repeated per group, but the URL_Content_Type
and Description subfields may not be repeated per group.
- If applicable, URL_Content_Type should be selected from the URL
Content Type Valids List: see Appendix A.
- New URL_Content_Type valids may be submitted for review.
URL_Content_Type valids may be 1 to 31 characters from the printable ASCII
character set.
- If the Related_URL Group is included in the DIF, URL is required.
- URLs may be 1 to 160 characters of the printable ASCII character set.
- The Description field may contain multiple lines of 1 to 80
characters per line. Characters may be selected from the printable ASCII
character set.
More Definitions
- URL_Content_Type: Describes the type of URL being referenced. This
field is used only in the case where a database search of a specific URL
type is necessary (see valids list).
- URL: Hypertext link to the remote resource associated with the data
set.
- Description: Up to several lines of text describing the kind of
information offered by the URL and associated with the data set.
Recommendations
- The Related_URL Group should be used to link to resources associated
with the data set such as data-specific software packages, related data
servers, calibration data, project home pages, and metadata extensions.
- URL Content Type valids should only be used for these specific
instances: DODS Data Server, DIAL Data Server, Calibration/Validation
Data, Software Packages, FGDC Metadata, NBII Metadata, and Project Home
Page. New URL Type valids may be suggested for review.
- Most often, URL Content Type will not be entered. Rather, descriptive
information about the associated data resource should be entered in the
Description field.
