Biosketch

Born in 1964 and raised in Mainz on the Rhine. Studied physics at the University of Kiel since 1983. In 1990 physics diploma, the thesis was on numerical N-body simulation of galaxies. In 1993 Ph.D. in physics, the dissertation was on interplanetary particle scattering in the magnetic fields of the Sun. In 1994 at the Department of Geography and the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University, working on science algorithms for NASA's satellite sensor MODIS, mainly for albedo. In 1996 Research Assistant Professor of Geography at Boston University. Since 1999 at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), working on global biogeochemistry, vegetation modelling, remote sensing and sustainability. Since 2003 Research Group Leader for the Biosphere at PIK.
