Research Analyst Position

For the Flagship PRIMAP PIK is offering

a Research Analyst position

in the field of climate-migration studies, starting as soon as possible.

(Position number: RD2-Research Analyst Position-24-2018)

The position is funded until February 2019. Remuneration is in accordance with German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13. This is a part-time position with a weekly working time of 30 hours per week.

Key responsibilities:

  • Literature research on the drivers of internal migration both in industrialized and developing countries (including economic, social, demographic, and other drivers), as well as the drivers of international migration between different types of countries
  • Collect sources of data for internal migration flows in different exemplary countries
  • Review existing spatially explicit methods for modeling internal migration (e.g. gravity models, radiation models, agent-based models) and identify the drivers and mechanisms represented in those models
  • Identify potential ways to combine a spatially explicit model of migration (e.g. a gravity model) with an explicit representation of each of the major drivers and determinants of migration (e.g. employment opportunities)
  • Prepare a report that summarizes the findings from the above tasks
  • Assist in the preparation of a proposal for a longer-term research project based on these findings


  • M.Sc. (or equivalent) in climate science or a relevant natural science discipline, e.g. physics; or in a relevant social science discipline, e.g. economics or political science
  • Programming skills e.g. in Python or C++ are a plus
