PhD Position-I-MAESTRO


The climate needs bright minds. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts and sustainable development. For the project “Innovative forest management strategies for a resilient bioeconomy under climate change and disturbances (I-MAESTRO) PIK is offering a PhD position. (m/f/d)

in the field of forest ecosystem modelling, starting on 01.05.2019.

(Position number: PhD Position – 04-2019)

The position is funded for three years. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13 This is a part-time position with a weekly working time of 26 hours per week. Appointment is conditional on approval by the funding agency.

Key responsibilities:

  • data analysis of European forest data (e.g. stand, soil, climate, inventory)
  • implementation and analysis of simulations with the process based forest model 4C
  • database development and management
  • creation of forest disturbance and forest management scenarios with the project partners
  • writing of scientific papers


  • a general interest in and sound understanding of forest ecology and management
  • very good knowledge of mathematics and statistics
  • experience in at least one programming language
  • knowledge of the statistical software R is an advantage

We expect:

  • the ability to work independently and on your own initiative
  • a methodical and systematic approach
  • structured and goal-oriented thinking
  • capacity to familiarise yourself quickly with new topics
  • a high level of competence in oral and written English
  • willingness to travel for work (project meetings, workshops etc.) and spend some weeks at project partners offices in Bonn and Grenoble.
