The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is looking for

two student research assistants starting soon to support the work on
sustainable energy system transformation in Germany, EU and Australia

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) addresses questions in the fields of energy system transformation, climate impacts, and sustainable development. Natural and social scientists work together to generate interdisciplinary insights that provide a sound basis for decision-making in society and policy. PIK’s historic science campus on Telegrafenberg Potsdam is in short commuting distance from Berlin. PIK seeks to increase the number of women in scientific positions.

Successful candidates would work on important and pressing questions relating to energy systems transformations in the “Global Energy Systems” group, which is part of PIK’s Research Domain III on “Sustainable Solutions”. The project is an Australian-German energy research cooperation called START. 30 researchers from Germany and Australia conduct a joint analysis of energy transition pathways by combining future scenarios with lessons learned in both countries. Focus topics of the cooperation are technologies and policies for a reliable integration of wind and solar sources into power systems, opportunities in energy-intensive and material industries, and sustainable mobility (e.g., electric vehicles, synthetic (bio-)fuels, hydrogen cars, autonomous driving).

We look for two student research assistants, one with a rather quantitative-analytical profile and one who would help with online search, communication and project management. If you are interested in both, we are flexible to mix the areas of responsibility.

Requirements for both profiles

  • advanced bachelor or master student;
  • strong analytical and organizational skills, independence and creativity;
  • good English communication skills;
  • interest and prior knowledge about energy systems and their future transformation

Requirements for the quantitative-analytical profile

  • experience scientific programming with a focus on data analysis, ideally knowledge of R, MATLAB or GAMS
  • interest in data research, preparation and analyses (conversion, aggregation, checking consistency, development of automated routines)
  • interest in developing data analysis routines in R for visualizing data and model results
  • potential interest in supporting the use of the GAMS-based energy-climate-economy model REMIND (and other models of the energy system

Requirements for the project management and communication profile

  • very good working knowledge of MS Word and Excel
  • very good English communication and organizational skills

The applicant should be interested to work 20-60 hours a month for 6-24 months starting soon.

Disabled applicants of equal scientific and personal suitability for the post will be preferred.

Please direct your concise and convincing application (including a short CV and description in note form of where you gained/used the skills listed above, and credentials) preferably by email as a single PDF to: jobs@pik-potsdam.de using the reference number RD3-HIWI.
