Acurate characterization of the trafic from diferent network applications plays an important role in trafic clasifications to guarante the quality of service of Internet trafic.The behavior of various network application trafic was analyzed based on the recurence properties of the network trafic. A high-dimensional phase space is constructed for the trafic time series and then recurences in the trafic state trajectory are analyzed to identify the intrinsic characteristics of the application trafic. Analyses show that the nonlinear dynamic features can acurately characterize application trafic behavior and that these features are independent of the network scale and Internet protocol version. Therefore, the nonlinear dynamics of application trafic can be used to improve network trafic clasification.
