Visualization and detection of coupling in time series by order recurrence plots

We introduce a new method to visualize dependencies between two time series based on their order structure. We use the idea of cross recurrence plots, applied to the local order of the time series. We derive a measure for the coupling strength, which is very robust against observational noise, nonlinear distortion of the amplitude and low-frequency trends. Furthermore we show connections to the instantaneous phase and the determination of phase coupling for two coupled Roessler systems, where this visualization tool is also applicable to the more challenging funnel regime.
