TESS Resilience Compass

home

As part of the TESS project that has been researching community based climate action groups across Europe, we have collected a range of quantitative data from our 63 case studies in six different countries. Using this data, we have developed a simple indicator for each point of the compass of resilience.
By inputting seven pieces of information about your own community group you can use the tool below to compare yourselves with these case studies across these four different dimensions of resilience.
Please note that this is not to be taken too seriously! Resilience is not something that can easily be quantified and any single indicator will always give a very partial assessment. However, we believe that collecting and inputting this data can still be useful for stimulating discussion around the success and impact of community initiatives, particularly if this is done as a group exercise.

General Note regarding the ranking scores: Please note that your ranking simply shows how your group compares with those in the TESS sample of case studies. It does not indicate achievement of any particular state of resilience.

How the different indices are computed

Participation index:
Number of participants active
in running your initiative's activities
× 100
Number of local people who benefit
from your initiative's activities

Economy index:
Annual turnover of
your initiative and any
associated enterprises
+ Estimated annual financial savings
made by beneficiaries as a result
of your initiative's activities
+ Annual value of
in-kind labour contributed by
your initiative's participants
100

Network index:
Number of
extremely important (vital) relations
+ 0.75 × Number of
very important relations
+ 0.5 × Number of
somewhat important (moderately) relations
+ 0.25 × Number of
not very important relations

Culture index:
Number of participants active in running your initiative's activities × Proportion of the active participants who previously knew each other prior to becoming involved with your initiative
Number of local people
who benefit from your initiative's activities
