Short Bio

Matthias Mengel is a Postdoctoral Researcher and AXA Research Fund fellow at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Courant Institute of New York University. He completed his PhD in 2015 on Antarctic ice dynamics and sea level change. In his Postdoc project he works on the stability of the West Antarctic ice sheet under future warming. He also researches empirical relations between climate warming and the contributors to sea level rise. In new research he investigates the impacts of sea level rise. He is part of the ISIMIP team. In 2013, he joined the Polarstern expedition ANT-XXIX/3 to the Antarctic Weddel sea. Thick ice made them stuck. Though he studies the cold regions of the planet, he rather loves the warm ones.
