Abstract

A dynamical model of the climate-biosphere system involving a carbon cycle is designed. A qualitative analysis is given for a model zero-dimensional in space. Three stable states of the biosphere are found: a "cold desert" with no vegetation, a "cold planet" rich in vegetation, and a "hot planet" with poor vegetation. Their stability properties can change dramatically due to an increase in the total amount of carbon caused, e.g., by anthropogenic emissions.
