RD IV - Research Areas
Transdisciplinary Concepts & Methods
Background
Climate impact research operates at the limits of the scientific enterprise as we know it. We contribute to this enterprise with a research strategy based on the notion of domains of discourse. Bridges between heterogeneous domains must be built on a case-by-case basis because the idea of an all-encompassing domain would be logically incoherent. To build such bridges we use mathematics as a platform for developing appropriate concepts in transdisciplinary co-operation. Since the origins of both philosophy and deductive mathematics in Ancient Greece, these two traditions have patiently worked towards an understanding of the role of concepts in the fabric of what we call reality. We are aware of the broad questions involved, but we deliberately focus on the following three research areas.
A) Case Studies
- TCM Case Study: Low-Emissions Cities (Speaker: F. Reusswig)
- TCM Case Study: The SuperSmartGrid (Speaker: A. Battaglini)
B) Methods
- Complex networks and synchronization (Speaker: J. Kurths and Y. Zou)
- Time Series Analysis (Speaker: N. Marwan)
- Integrated Risk Governance (Speaker: A. Haas)
C) Concepts
- A Model of the German Economy (Speaker: C. Jaeger)
