A new research programme had been developed at PIK and was established January 2001 after an elaborate internal contest. In general, research activities at PIK are now organised in new transdisciplinary projects appropriated temporarily and independent from departments. Projects are related either to one superior or to six special thematic research areas called TOPIKs.

In the period between 1994 - 2000 research at PIK was organised in transdisciplinary "core projects" related to important key questions of Global Change and Earth System Analysis. The investigations were arranged according to global perspective, regional focus, and sectoral view.
