During the 2011 European Geosciences Union General Assembly Dr. Diego Rybski and Dr. Jürgen Kropp organize the session "Storm Surges and Coastal areas: Extreme events, damages, and risk". The EGU assembly takes place in Vienna, Austria, from 3 to 8 April 2011.

Abstract - As a consequence of global sea level rise, more frequent and more extreme high sea levels need to be anticipated. With increasing awareness, politicians and other stakeholders are becoming interested in the implications of this development and in adequate response actions. In particular urban areas need to be protected since they host enormous assets in several regions worldwide. Thus, it is the quest to identify exposed domains, characterize their proneness, and estimate the associated risks. This requires the application of established methods as well as the development of more sophisticated ones, i.e. for the assessment of extreme events, damages, and risks. Furthermore, optimal solutions of adaptation not only need to be efficient but in particular sustainable with respect to environment, society, and economy.

Despite global sea level trends, strong deviations occur on the local spatial scale. Accordingly, it is indispensable to consider regional scales and to investigate case studies, such as the North/Baltic Sea coasts, or from developing countries in order to investigate generalized methods and theories.

Deadline for abstract submission: 10 January 2011
