In Extremis: Disruptive Events and Trends in Climate and Hydrology edited by J. P. Kropp, H. J. Schellnhuber The book addresses a weakness of current methodologies used in extreme value assessment, i.e. the assumption of stationarity, which is not given in reality. With respect to this issue a lot of new developed technologies are presented, i.e. influence of trends vs. internal correlations, quantitative uncertainty assessments, etc. The book not only focuses on artificial time series data, but has a close link to empirical measurements, in order to make the suggested methodologies applicable for practitioners in water management and meteorology. Crop adaptation to climate change edited by Yadav, S.S., Redden, R., Hatfield, J.S., Lotze-Campen, H., Hall, A. Many of the effects of global warming, changing temperature and rainfall patterns, have been recognized as climate change factors affecting agriculture, and these climate trends are expected to adversely affect crops in most agricultural regions in coming decades and be only partly compensated by increased CO2 concentrations and improved environments in northern latitudes and high altitudes, with net overall depression of yield. Global climate change therefore calls for advancements in crop genetic diversity, to develop genotypes which can adapt to a variety of complex climate changes and withstand less than ideal growing conditions. |

Continents under climate change edited by W. Endlicher, F.-W.

Water Framework Directive: model supported implementation. A water manager's guide edited by F. F. Hattermann, Z. W. Kundzewicz Water resources planning and management and the development of appropriate policies requires methodologies and tools that are able to support systematic, integrative and multidisciplinary assessments at various scales. It also requires the quantification of various uncertainties in both data and models, and the incorporation of stakeholders participation and institutional mechanisms into the various tools and risk assessment methodologies, to help decision makers understand and evaluate alternative measures and decisions. This requirement has been explicitly recognised in the context of the European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD). This book is one of the concrete outcomes of the Harmoni_CA concerted action (supported by the European Commission). It provides a framework for model_supported participatory planning of measures at various river basin scales and practical guidance to water managers and other interested stakeholders on the model_supported implementation of the WFD. The objective of the book is to offer guidance to water managers on the model_supported implementation of the Water Framework Directive at the level of a river basin district and at other levels (such as sub_basins, national, or international scale in the case of international river basins). It should help water managers to better understand how models may be used for planning purposes, while special attention is given to the problem of predicting an uncertain future, one very likely to differ from the present. Integrated analysis of the impacts of global change on environment and society in the Elbe river basin edited by F. Wechsung, S. Kaden,H. Behrendt, B. Klöcking Results are presented and discussed according to a methodological approach which leads step by step from formulation of scenarios to evaluation of management strategies, in doing so considering the differing interests of those involved in and those affected by water management planning. Among the most important results is the finding that in order to secure river inflow to Berlin under warmer and drier conditions than at present, it could be decisive that redundant mining pits in Lusatia are filled as quickly as possible. In addition, important insights are presented on the possibilities to further improve the water quality of the Elbe, on the impacts of climate change on wetlands, and on the potential for adaptation for the city of Berlin. The book is intended for not only for scientists, but also for authorities and those concerned with solving the problems of the availability and quality of surface waters in the Elbe river basin. http://www.weissensee-verlag.de/autoren/wechsung_engl.htm |

New Uncertainty Concepts in Hydrology and Water Resources (International Hydrology Series) edited by Z. W. Kundzewicz One of the greatest problems hydrology research faces is how to quantify uncertainty, which is inherent in every hydrological process. This overview of uncertainty emphasizes non-orthodox concepts, such as random fields, fractals and fuzziness. This book reviews alternative and conventional methods of risk and uncertainty representation in hydrology and water resources. The water-related applications discussed in the book pertain to areas of strong interest, such as multifractals and climate change impacts. The authors represent a variety of research backgrounds, achieving a broad subject coverage. The material covered provides an important insight into theories of uncertainty related to the field of hydrology. The book is international in its scope, and will be welcomed by researchers and graduate students of hydrology and water resources. (source: http://www.cambridge.org) |
