A conference which should strengthen German-Indian Cooperation in the field
of Climate Research took place at the All-India Institute for Social and Economic
Change (ISEC) in Bangalore from 19.-20.10.11 with more than 200 scientists.
The conference with particular focussed on adaptation and mitigation of climate
change was supported by the Humboldt Foundation on occasion of
60th anniversary of Indian/German diplomatic relationships.
J Kropp opened the conference together with the Chief Minister (Minister President
of the State of Karnataka) Shri Sadananda Gowda and the Governor (President)
Dr. Hans Raj Bhardwaj.
As the guest of honor J Kropp gave also the key note lecture on the first day. He stated
that despite of necessary adaptation tasks the solution of the climate change challenge is still
emission reduction. During the discussion Kropp made clear that accelerated climate change
will undoubtfully threaten India's growth and sustainable transition options. Among the latter
water availability and management and food security are the most emerging ones.
During the concluding session J.Kropp stated in his final remarks that an institute like ISEC
are ideal cooperation partner for bringing down the climate change challenge to the ground.
As a country that is still importing more than 70% of its necessary oil equivalents and with
a population which is to 50% dependend on mostly rain fed agriculture clearly shows that
socio-economic development and climate change have close interlinkages. India and
Germany can be among the first movers by making clear how the socio-economic and
climate change challenges can be reconciled by highlighting development options under
parallel consideration of climate protection and adaptation.
