Title of the talk: Managing conservation conflicts (pdf: 4MB)

Abstract

Managing conservation conflicts

As human pressure on the planet increases, conflicts between people over how to manage biodiversity become more frequent. This presents a major challenge to those interested in conserving biodiversity. In this talk I will focus on the role of science, dialogue, leadership and trust in resolving such conflicts. I will also discuss the role of the scientist in all this. Predators are often at the centre of many conflicts between people who either view them as a threat or seek to conserve them, and throughout the talk I will draw from my experiences in working on a particular conflict involving birds of prey and red grouse in the UK uplands. This study has provided a fascinating and continually developing example of the issues and problems surrounding conflict management. We will consider the causes of the conflict and alternative solutions. I will outline the current state of play and explore what this particular conflict tells us about approaches to other biodiversity conflicts.
