Case study for the working groups:

The case study area this year was the Verdon catchment and the project formulated as if it were a EU project: MASSIF "Mapping Regional Vulnerability in the Southern Alps – Evaluating Trends and Developing Sustainable Adaptation Strategies for the Verdon Catchment" of which a copy was in the folders of the participants as well as a list of literature provided in folders and on CDs in the plenary. Working groups were then formed taking the preferences of the participants into account. There were working groups on agriculture (Martin), nature conservation (Eric) and tourism (Diana). One delegate from each group and four permanent members formed a synthesis group (Brooke) who summarised the results of the three case studies for policy-makers. Uta, the chair of the tutors, presented a short overview of the case study area and the project on the second day of the summer school (7 September).

After the excursion to the Gorges du Verdon (which is of course part of the catchment) there was an interim meeting on 12 September in the plenary were all the groups showed an interim presentation on their theme:

The results of the working groups were presented on the last day on 17 September:

The reports were mostly finalised after the summer school and submitted till mid-November and then compiled in a final combined report (pdf: 5MB) and here are the separate reports for downloading.

Uta gave an introduction to science communication on 10 September and so all the groups were prepared to formulate a press release on their results on the last day. As in real life the time was extremely short as the groups were working on their reports but at dinner after each course a press release were communicated to all of us.
