Abstract

Biodiversity, local participation and gender - Or: The introduction of a feminist political ecology

There have been decades after decades with focus on gender issues. Nevertheless, gender equality remains a neglected dimension in biodiversity conservation in Europe as well as in the rest of the world. In this presentation I will start describing the situation with some examples, then move on to the following questions: Does it really matter? How can it be explained? And: Can something be done about it? As students and researchers we are dependent on good research approaches to frame and carry out our research. I will introduce the tradition of political ecology and a more specific version of a feminist political ecology. These hold useful perspectives and tools to the study of the mentioned questions as well as to other questions on how landscapes and biodiversity are and could be conserved and sustainably used.
