  • 1952 – 1966 Elementary and high school (Bregenz, Feldkirch; Austria)
  • 1967 – 1975 Studies at the University of Innsbruck, (Biology and Earth Sciences) Degrees: Magister rerum naturalium, Doctor philosophiae, Doctoral thesis. “Contributions to the ecophysiology of the alpine dwarf shrub Loiseleuria procumbens” (in German) (as contribution to the IBP-project “Dwarf shrub heath, Mt. Patscherkofel”; chaired by Prof. W. Larcher)
  • 1975 – 1986 Assistant Professor at the Institute of Botany (Geobotany), University of Innsbruck; Research: Production biology of alpine grasslands as contribution to the Austrian MAB-project “Obergurgl”; Classification and ordination of alpine plant communities; Impact of tourism on alpine grassland ecosystems; Revegetation at high altitudes; Further activities: Inventories of rare and endangered habitats for conservation; Contributions to the flora mapping of Austria; Consultant for the Tyrolean government on high alpine ecology
  • 1979 Research fellow at the University of Wales (Bangor; Prof. P. Greig-Smith, Prof. J. Harper); Application of numerical methods on ecological data from alpine plant communities; introduction to plant population biology
