Abstract

Monitoring, modelling and managing land-use change on a large scale

Numerous interactions between human activities and environmental processes are related to land use and land use change. Food, fibre and forestry production are determined and constrained by the availability of land, water and other biophysical factors. At the same time, environmental conditions are more or less strongly affected by various human activities. The analysis of land use and land use change is usually conducted on the regional to local scale, due to data constraints and the complexity of the processes involved. However, in the context of global change research, e.g. climate change or socio-economic globalization, land use change also has to be considered on the large scale, in order to capture important global linkages. We will present and discuss the strengths and limitations of large-scale modelling approaches for land use change research. We will also discuss a concept for linking large-scale modelling approaches with local or regional case studies on monitoring and managing land use. Finally, we will open up the discussion on how the concept of ecosystem services could be captured within these modelling approaches.
