Alexander Popp studied biology and informatics at the Philips-University Marburg, the Humboldt University Berlin and the University of Potsdam, where he obtained a Diploma in biology. He finished his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) with the topic “An integrative modelling approach for sustainable management of arid rangelands” at the University of Potsdam in 2007. His Ph.D. thesis was integrated into the framework of BIOTA Southern Africa, a joint project of German, Namibian and South-African researchers. In co-operation with scientists from different disciplines like botany, soil science, economy and remote sensing he investigated the complex interactions between climate change, land use and vegetation dynamics as a basis for long-term management.
Alexander Popp then became Research Fellow at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in the ALARM project which aims to assess and forecast changes in biodiversity and in structure, function, and dynamics of ecosystems due to global change. His research concerns land-use changes, the interaction of hydrological and ecological processes and the impact of climate change on biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources.
