Title of the talk: Networking of long-term biodiversity and ecosystem research and monitoring from local to global (pdf: 10MB)
Biosketch
I’m currently based at the UK’s Centre for Ecology and Hydrology site at Lancaster.
Research Background: A D. Phil at the University of York on plant and soil faunal succession. After this I joined the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology doing research on woodland change, wetland dynamics, vegetation management, climate change impacts and environmental indicators. From 1990 to 1993 I was seconded to the Department of the Environment (now Defra) where I provided scientific advice to policy and managed a range of research projects including 'Countryside Survey 1990’. Since 1995 I have been the Co-ordinator of the UK Environmental Change Network.
Current Research and Development areas: My main areas of research are on the detection, interpretation and forecasting of climate change impacts on ecosystems and the development of indicators of environmental change – although the truth is I’m now more of a science research administrator than a researcher. Hence, I am heavily involved in the development of International Networks for Long-term Ecological Research and am co-ordinating the EC Network of Excellence to create a “Long-term Biodiversity, Ecosystem Research and Awareness Network” (ALTER-Net). I am also closely involved in the development of international LTER networks in Europe (LTER-Europe) and globally (ILTER).
And some other stuff: I’ll be arriving in Peyresq almost directly from the latest ILTER meeting in Beijing where we will be discussing how we can make ILTER a more globally relevant organisation. I’ll let you know if we make any progress and if not you can tell me where it is going wrong. I love football, cricket and cats, although the order varies from day to day and depends very much on results.
