Biosketch

Born in 1964 and raised in Mainz on the Rhine. Married, one daughter. Studied physics at the University of Kiel since 1983. In 1990 physics diploma with a thesis on numerical N-body simulation. In 1993 Ph.D. in physics with a dissertation on energetic particle scattering in interplanetary magnetic fields. 1994-1998 postdoc at the Department of Geography and the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University, working on albedo science algorithms for NASA's environmental satellite sensor MODIS. In 1996 Research Assistant Professor of Geography at Boston University. Since 1999 at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). 2001-2006 head of a young investigators research group funded by German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Since 2003 Research Group Leader for the Biosphere at PIK. In 2004 declined a full Professorship of Geoinformatics. In 2005 appointed Research Professor (apl) of Biosphere Dynamics and Earth System Research at the University of Potsdam, Institute of Geoecology.
