Biosketch
Henk Siepel (1959) studied biology at Utrecht University and graduated cum laude in 1984 (animal ecology and systematics, vegetation ecology, soil chemistry). During his study and afterwards he taught animal ecology and systematics and applied ecology at this university. The course on applied ecology is still one of his tasks. Late 1984 he started as researcher at the former Research Institute for Nature management (now merged into Alterra). In 1994 he defended his PhD on ‘Structure and function of soil micro-arthropods’ at Wageningen University. The research herein is still his core business in terms of research into life-history tactics. Meanwhile as researcher, teamleader (1993) and head of department (1998) he carried out a high number of applied projects and had to spend much time on management issues as the institute went through three large mergers, several reorganizations and became a privatized company in 1999. In 2004 he was appointed as full professor in applied animal ecology at the Radboud University Nijmegen, where he has again time to focus on the applications of life-history tactics in nature management and restoration. Currently, he is also executive director of the Centre for Ecosystem Studies of Alterra and Wageningen University and teaches applied ecology at Utrecht University.
