Educational activities
Supervisor of 6 PhD students.
Actively involved in founding the University of South Bohemia, Faculty of Biology (1990) in Ceske Budejovice, being vice-dean for two years and head of the Department of Ecology for one year.
Lecturer and member of PhD Committee for Hydrobiology at the Faculty.

Scientific activities
Current main topics are long-term changes in pelagic food webs in reservoirs and lakes with the emphasis on microbial role.
Published more than 150 scientific papers, a list of the references from the last 6 years can be downloaded here.
Involved in organization and edition of Proceedings in International Conferences on Reservoir Limnology and Water Quality (1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2006)

International projects
Actively involved in the International Biological Programme, Freshwater Productivity section (1965 – 1970).
Coordinator of Czech (institutional) part in EU projects during 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th frameworks during 1992 – up to now.
Projects: mountain lakes (ALPE I, ALPE II, MOLAR, EMERGE), lake Baikal primary production (CONTINENT), ALTER-Net.
Head of Czech LTER (long-term ecological research) network as a part of International LTER since 1996 up to 2003.
