Title of the talk: Why conserve biodiversity?


Biosketch

Martin Sharman received his PhD in ethology and is now Head of the Biodiversity Sector in the Directorate General for Research of the European Commission. He is Secretary of the steering committee of the European Platform for Biodiversity Research Strategy and a Member of Commission delegation to the Convention on Biological Diversity CoP and SBSTTA. Further he is the Commission representative on the Board of Governors of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

His main responsibility is to provide strategic direction to the biodiversity sector in the Environment Directorate. This sector administers contracts for research into terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity in the EU Framework Programmes for Research and Development. His main objective is to help to define and implement the European Research Area for biodiversity.
