Biosketch
Professor Will Steffen is the Director of the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies at the Australian National University, Canberra, and is also the Director of ANU's Institute for Environment. Prior to taking up his ANU appointments, from July 2004 through October 2005, Steffen was Science Adviser, Australian Greenhouse Office, and Visiting Fellow, Bureau of Rural Sciences, Australian Government, Canberra. From 1998 to mid-2004, he served as Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, headquarted in Stockholm, Sweden. Steffen received his PhD in inorganic chemistry in 1975 from the University of Florida, USA. His research interests span a broad range within the field of Earth System science, with a special emphasis on terrestrial ecosystem interactions with global change, the global carbon cycle, incorporation of human processes in Earth System modelling and analysis, and sustainability and Earth System science.
