Biosketch
Viera Straskrabova is since 1998 senior scientist at the Institute of Hydrobiology in the Biology Centre, Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic, Ceske Budejovice. From 1980-1990 she was the department head of aquatic microbiology and self-purification processes at the Hydrobiological Institute before she became the director of this institute.
Viera Straskrabova was actively involved in founding the Faculty of Biology at the University of South Bohemia (1990) in Ceske Budejovice, being vice-dean for two years and head of the Department of Ecology for one year. She is now a lecturer and member of the PhD Committee for Hydrobiology at the Faculty.
Her main research topics are long-term changes in pelagic food webs in reservoirs and lakes with the emphasis on microbial role. She published more than 150 scientific papers in international journals and proceedings. She is involved in organization and edition of proceedings of the International Conferences on Reservoir Limnology and Water Quality (1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2006).
Viera Straskrabova was actively involved in the International Biological Programme, Freshwater Productivity Section (1965 – 1970). She is Coordinator of the Czech (institutional) part in EU projects during the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Framework Programmes. Projects include: mountain lakes (ALPE I, ALPE II, EMERGE), lake Baikal production (CONTINENT) and ALTER-Net.
