GREENWATER: Consistent assessment of global green, blue and virtual water
fluxes in the context of food production: regional stresses and
worldwide teleconnections
- Improving blue water representation in the dynamic global vegetation and water balance model LPJmL (Lund-Potsdam-Jena managed land)
- Implementation of simple but process-based schemes for river-routing, lake water storage and irrigation into the LPJmL model
- Hydrologic validation of the improved model
- Consistent assessment
of productive green water (soil water transpiring through plants),
unproductive green water (evaporation from bare soil, vegetation
canopies or open water bodies) and blue water (available liquid water
in rivers, lakes and aquifers)
- Estimation of the virtual water content of crops (the amount of green or blue water required to produce a unit of crop yield)
- Consistent assessment of virtual water trade between nations and regions
- Comparison of model results as simulated by two different models (LPJmL and WaterGAP)
- Development of new water stress indicators, which combine blue and green water requirements
