Time: 29th May to 2nd June 2010

Location: Liebenberg (situated close to Berlin, Germany)

The idea of bringing together limnological scientists with different backgrounds came from Kalevi Salonen, who arranged the 1st Inernational Winter Limnology Symposium in Finland (SIL NEWS 53, page 7) in 2008. At the end of the meeting we agreed that we must follow up this event since the changing climate will affect our lakes and needs to be observed by limnologists from all disciplines (see: Preface of the Special Issue of the First International Winter Limnology Symposium).

This is the reason why a 2nd International Winter Limnology Symposium is being organized. It will take place from 29 May to 2nd June 2010 in Liebenberg, which is situated close to Berlin. The theme of the forth-coming symposium will be “Lakes during Winter under a Changing Climate”. The idea is to bring together scientists from different disciplines to discuss the current state of knowledge about winter limnology, as well as observed and expected changes.

The main topics of the forthcoming symposium will be:

I. Climate Change
Keynote Lecture: N.N.

II. Physics
Keynote Lecture
Prof. John C. Priscu, Montana State University, US

III. Plankton and Biogeochemical Cycles
Keynote Lecture
Is it the winter? Biogeochemical Cycles in high altitude lakes
Prof. Dr. Roland Psenner, Universität Innsbruck, Austria

IV. Fish in a Changing Aquatic World
Keynote Lecture: N.N.

The symposium will be organized by Heike Zimmermann-Timm (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Goethe University) and Christof Engelhardt and Georgiy Kirllin (both from the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Biology and Inland Fishery).

It will take place in a small manor house in Liebenberg, a romantic location visited by various princes and described by the poet Theodor Fontane. It is accessible by public transport. The price will be approximately 650 euros, which includes the conference fee, the excursion, accommodation and food. We are trying to find sponsors in order to be able to reduce the conference fee – especially for our young scientists.

The lectures and posters will be presented in plenary. Please note that the results of our symposium will be published in the journal Aquatic Sciences in review format. Those who are interested in supporting this procedure should contact me.

The second announcement is expected to be sent out at the end of October. If you have questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me at: Zimmermann-Timm@oss.uni-frankfurt.de

There is space In Liebenberg for 70 participants; the order of your application will thus be crucial.
