Research Areas and Main Fields of Work

Studies on land use impacts and their changes in the Elbe River Area

  • Analysis of influences on precipitation by flooding of open cast mining pits in Lusatia. See the paper "Measured effects of new lake surfaces on regional precipitation" in the Hydrological Sciences Journal, October-Issue 2007.
  • Temperature patterns of landscape types -- analysis of remote sensing data (work in progress); at the moment also
    • Supervision of a Bachelor-Thesis on the same topic
  • Effects of landscape temperature patterns (local climate) on hydrology and nutrient fluxes (planned)

Contributions to the GLOWA-Elbe-II project

  • Preparation and calibration of the eco-hydrological model system SWIM for the entire Elbe River area. Simulation of all relevant water and matter fluxes on daily basis in currently 2278 subbasins and more than 45,000 hydrotopes (sub-areas with uniform soil and land use). In collaboration with Dr. Fred Hattermann the model is permanently being upgraded, e.g. crop rotations will soon be included.
  • Scenario calculations based on 100 STAR climate scenarios till the year 2055. Results: Discharge data for the water management model WBalMo (wasy AG und ZALF), the quality models Moneris (IGB) and QSim (BfG), and maps of agricultural yield potentials for the farm model RAUMIS (FAL).
  • Objective (of the entire project GLOWA-Elbe II): To foresee water use conflicts in the Elbe River area under the circumstances of climate and social change in good time and to develop strategies of action. Details can be found on the GLOWA-Elbe-Website.
