- The IT-Services group maintains a dedicated computer in the cupola which is directly connected to the overhead beamer. Presentations can be up-loaded from personal computers onto this computer using the local area network (LAN). Please note, that the IT-Services group in not responsible for the beamer itself or the Medienwand. In case of problems with these consult either Mr. Hauke or Mr. Lindenhan.

Application Software Provisioning

- This service covers the management of application servers for IBM AIX, Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems as well as the provision of centrally administered commercial and public domain software for those platforms. Applications available on application servers can be accessed independently from the operating system at the scientists desk via the local data network.

Backup & Archiving

- This service provides a central backup and restore facility for all servers and personal computers of the institute, a tape archive pool for data which need to be stored for longer periods of time and policies for disaster recovery. The service is currently based on the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Software (TSM), an IBM 3494 tape library with 16 x IBM E05/06 tape drives and a total of 2000 cartridge slots. About 1000 tapes are currently available. Uncompressed capacity of one cartridge is one terabyte, thus current gross capacity of the library is about one petabyte which could be easily extended to over two petabyte if required.

- This service covers management and operation of the physical and logical network infrastructure which connects personal computers and services. The service covers wide area and local area computer networks, including wireless networks.

Database Management

- Management of the central database software of the institute which provides access to miscellaneous scientific databases [Meteorology, Hydrology, Phenology, et al.]. The service is based on ORACLE database management software and dedicated database servers. Please note, that strategic and conceptual development of scientific data organization for the institute falls under the responsibility of research domain IV.

E-mail Infrastructure

- This service covers the exchange, distribution and backup of all e-mail send to and received by the institute, the management of mailboxes on an dedicated server (IMAP/POP), a web-mail interface which provides access to e-mail from anywhere on the Internet, SPAM control and support for e-mail client configurations. The service is based on several open source software packages.

Filesystems Storage

- In addition to persistent storage capacity available on local disks, the IT-Service group provides central storage capacity which can be used remotely over the local area network (LAN). This service represents the management and provisioning of about 350 terabyte net capacity of on-line storage for scientific data. This includes installation, control and repair of disks, filesystems, directories and files as well as performance tuning of parallel filesystems.

- This includes Mail- and Webhosting for project groups or service units inside their own Internet domains - completely separated from the "pik-potsdam.de" domain of the institute. In addition and upon request, project groups may be granted full ownership of their own virtual servers for special purposes.

High Performance Computing

- Selection, purchase, installation and operation of high performance computers for numerically intensive scientific applications. This service is currently based on an IBM iDataPlex cluster computer, operational since May 2009. The cluster computer is composed of 2.560 CPU of type Intel Harpertown, 10 terabyte of random access memory, a Voltaire infiniband network and a parallel filesystem with a net capacity of 300 terabytes.

- This service ranges from the development of standard configurations for personal computers and laptops, over the initial set-up and roll-out of all newly purchased computers to personalized problem management throughout the life cycle of a PC, covering a wide range of hard- and software. About 350 personal computers are currently under management.

Printing, Plotting and Document Scanning

- This service includes the installation and maintenance of all central and departmental printing devices as well as the management of a centralized print queue system. The service is currently based on the open source software CUPS, running on a dedicated server, about 25 departmental printers (color or black-white) and one A0 plotting device.

Professional Training

- Every 3 years the IT-Services group offers up to two apprenticeships as skilled worker in the field "Fachinformatiker/-in". Although this doesn't exactly look like an user-oriented service in the first place, it is worth mentioning that our apprentices are both eager and qualified to support scientists of the institute in their routine tasks, like printing, data backup, network configuration and the like.

- A central software repository is kept and maintained at the institute, based on the open source version control system "subversion". Access to the software repositories is via the HTTP protocol.

User Account- and Identity Management

- Authentication, authorization and accounting are important prerequisites to grant users access to the infrastructure of the institute. This service covers the organization and management of all user account (identity) related issues, spanning several different operating system platforms and applications (i.e. web portals, e-mail, printers, file storage, backup- and archive systems, databases, supercomputers).

Video Conferencing

- This service is based on the video conferencing service of the Deutsches Forschungsnetz Verein (DFN) and it is available to all scientist and staff of the institute. Today the video conferencing (VC) infrastructure of the institute consists of one portable Sony PCS-TL50 office system using Internet connections.

- This service was under responsibility of the IT-Services group from 1994 until 2006. In 2007 responsibility for the service had been moved to the executive staff of the institute. The IT-Services group still manages parts of the infrastructure, in particular the dedicated servers involved and the means required to host virtual domains (i.e. http://www.nobel-cause.de/; http://www.ipcc-wg3.de/).
